HeatherRidge Woods: Placemaking Grant

A forgotten walking trail in Gurnee became the palette for Quin O’Brien, a REALTOR® with 4 Sale Realty Advantage and NAR-Mainstreet Placemaking grant recipient.

With a $5,000 grant, Quin was able to turn an overgrown trail into a destination for area residents. The trail was widened and mulched, benches were refurbished, and a trail head consisting of brand new benches, a Little Free Library and incredible sunsets was created.

While Quin is handy, he didn’t take on the project alone. Instead, he teamed up with Gavin Short, an area high schooler looking to complete his Eagle Scout project. The duo were able to bring a group of over 90 volunteers together to work through the Labor Day Weekend. Several elected officials took part in the effort and got busy digging, raking, and spreading mulch.

The result is a testament to the hard work of the community, as well as the imagination and dedication of Quin and Gavin. The path is now used for a daily walk for many residents, while others enjoy relaxing with a book or catching a beautiful sunset from the trail head.

Mainstreet is honored to have played a role in this outstanding community effort!
