The REALTOR® Difference: Code of Ethics

REALTORS® Held to a Higher Standard

All REALTORS® are held to a higher standard of practice and professionalism than non-REALTOR® licensees, known as the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Code of Ethics. NAR's Code of Ethics, adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients' best interests.

REALTORS® are required to complete training on the NAR Code of Ethics each triennial period.

Requirement Periods

January 1, 2019 - December 31, 2021
January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2024
January 1, 2025 - December 31, 2027

Ways to Fulfill the Requirement

Complete your requirement with Mainstreet and gain access to the highest quality content and instructors.

Your Ethics requirement is due by December 31, 2024: Mainstreet has  a full schedule of live courses as well as online options with expert instructors and unique course topics that fulfill the qualifications of the NAR ethics requirement (2.5 hours of ethics credit every 3 years).

Are you a new Mainstreet member? New members are required to fulfill the ethics requirement through NAR's 2.5 hour online course before attending Mainstreet's New Member JumpStart course.

Existing Members have the option to take the course for free with NAR's 2.5 Hour Free Course for Existing Members (no C.E. Credit awarded). This course is customizable within three segments of real estate: residential, commercial and appraisal.

Completed Your Ethics with Another School?

As of Feb. 1st, 2021, Mainstreet will only accept Code of Ethics courses taken with a REALTOR® school.  If you completed your Code of Ethics with a non-REALTOR® school before Feb. 1st, 2021, your certificate of completion will be grandfathered in for the 2021 renewal deadline. Appraisers may submit a certificate of completion of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) to fulfil the requirement.
